Core Challenge

Inefficient layout, lack of storage

Key Objective

Maximize functionality and perceived space

In the urban jungle, square footage is a luxury. But as the team at Pichome Design loves to prove, a small footprint doesn't have to mean a small life. This project is a masterclass in space optimization, showing how a compact, inefficient apartment was transformed into a model of smart, multi-functional urban living that feels anything but small.

The Diagnosis: A Layout That Wasted Its Greatest Asset - Space

The original apartment was a puzzle of poor decisions. A long, oppressive corridor consumed a shocking amount of the floor plan, the living area was cramped, and storage was a mere afterthought. For a young professional living a dynamic life, the space was a source of constant frustration.

  • The Space-Eating Corridor: The hallway was the primary villain, a dark and narrow passage that served only to connect rooms while stealing valuable living area and blocking light.
  • Lack of Functional Zoning: The living area was a single, awkward room that had to serve too many functions without clear definition, resulting in a cluttered and chaotic feel.
  • The Storage Crisis: With almost no built-in storage, the client was forced to rely on bulky, freestanding furniture, which further encroached on the limited floor space.

Before & After: Unlocking Hidden Potential

The original floor plan showing a long corridor and cramped, poorly defined rooms.

BEFORE: A layout where a third of the space was lost to circulation.

The redesigned floor plan showing an open, multi-functional living area and integrated storage.

AFTER: A smart, efficient layout where every inch serves a purpose.

The Design Intervention: A Strategy of 'Surgical' Precision

Our philosophy for small spaces is simple: every element must work hard. We approached this project with a surgical mindset, aiming to make every inch serve at least one, if not multiple, purposes.

"In a small apartment, every design choice is magnified. We chose to eliminate the 'dead weight' of the hallway, and that single decision unlocked everything else."
  • The Great Erasure: Our first and most critical move was to completely erase the corridor. This act of 'annihilation' immediately absorbed that precious square footage back into the living area, making the apartment feel twice as large and infinitely brighter.
  • The Multi-Functional 'Chameleon' Core: The newly expanded living area was designed as a shape-shifter. A sleek, linear kitchen runs along one wall. A compact dining table serves as both a place to eat and a comfortable workspace. The lounge area is defined by a rug, creating a cozy zone without a single wall.
  • Storage as Architecture: We addressed the storage crisis by designing a full-height wall of custom wardrobes in the bedroom. This not only provides ample, seamless storage but also acts as a beautiful architectural feature. Inside the bedroom, we also integrated a slim, floating desk, creating a dedicated work-from-home spot that feels intentional, not cluttered.
  • Perception of Space: We used a palette of light colors, reflective surfaces, and mirrors to bounce light around the apartment, further enhancing the perception of spaciousness and creating a serene, airy atmosphere.

The Result: A Blueprint for Intelligent Urban Living

This project powerfully demonstrates that thoughtful, clever design can triumph over a lack of square footage. The final apartment is a testament to smart living: it's organized, multi-functional, beautiful, and feels spacious and calm. It’s a home that not only fits the owner's life but actively makes it better.
