Lack of separation between work and family life
Key Objective
Design a home that supports both focused work and family connection
The modern home is no longer just a space for living; for many, it has also become the office. Our client, a creative professional, came to Pichome Design with a challenge that resonates with many today: how to create a home that fosters both a productive, inspiring work environment and a comfortable, connected family life, without one compromising the other.
The Starting Point: A Home Without Boundaries
The original layout provided no clear demarcation between living and working zones. This resulted in constant distractions, a lack of professional atmosphere for client calls, and the feeling that one was never truly 'off the clock.'
"The key question was philosophical: should work be separated from life, or integrated into it? The answer is different for everyone. Our job was to illustrate both paths architecturally."
Design Vision A: The Balanced Enclave
A strategy of clear boundaries for focused work and peaceful living.
This approach champions the idea that separation is key to balance. We created distinct zones for work and family, allowing for a mental and physical transition between the two modes.
- The Dedicated Office: We converted a secondary bedroom into a fully-equipped home office. Crucially, we used framed glass doors instead of a solid wall. This maintains a sense of openness and allows light to pass through, while providing essential acoustic separation for deep focus and private meetings.
- A Centralized Family Hub: The living, dining, and kitchen areas were consolidated into a large, open-plan space. This keeps family activities centered in one vibrant area, physically and psychologically separate from the office.
- The Flexible Third Space: The third bedroom was designed as a multi-functional guest room that also serves as a quiet reading nook or hobby space, adding another layer of utility to the home.
Design Vision B: The Integrated Studio
A fluid, loft-like environment where work and inspiration flow freely.
For those who thrive on a more fluid boundary between their passion and their life, this design dissolves walls to create a dynamic, open studio environment.
- The Expansive Creative Zone: We removed the walls of the bedroom adjacent to the living room, creating a vast, open area. This space is intelligently zoned with furniture and rugs to house large worktables, storage, and a comfortable lounge area, blurring the lines between work and leisure.
- The Private Sanctuary: With the main living area now a hub of creative energy, the master bedroom was enhanced to become a true retreat. We expanded the closet and created a serene seating area, ensuring a peaceful space to disconnect.
- An Inspirational Atmosphere: This design transforms the entire home into a creative loft, perfect for an artist, designer, or anyone who draws energy and inspiration from their living environment.
